The Excavated Roads
In the world, there are few places like this.
The Etruscans were a people of ancient Italy, who lived between the 9th and the 1st century BC, in a vast area known as Etruria. Their name, derived from πππππππ, rΓ senna, or πππππ, rasna.
In the midst of a green and silent forest, impressive artificial pathways carved into the rock stand out, with walls towering over 25 meters high.
Sacred roads created in antiquity by the Etruscans and never abandoned through the medieval and modern times.
Ancestral paths that cut through the forest, connecting it, passing through its heart.
Choosing to walk one of these roads means doing so on multiple levels; visible, invisible, intimately profound.
Every step resonates, every breath synchronizes with the slow breath of the place.
The light is left behind, limited by the towering rock walls, entering the shadow.
Where one is not alone.
The same place indeed houses an extensive Etruscan necropolis.
Tombs also carved into the rock, large and small, with elaborate decorations or simple frames but with doors always open and therefore not only accessible but passable, in one direction and the other.
The final resting places of ancient inhabitants, gathered and spread throughout the forest.
A suspended, primitive and liminal place, charged with indescribable energy.
We are in Central Italy, between the towns of Sovana, Sorano, and Pitigliano, in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany.
A few kilometers away, leaving behind the 15th-century village of S.Quirico going on foot, you reach another extraordinary place. The ruins of an extensive rock settlement, over two hundred caves used as dwellings in medieval times and for centuries thereafter.
A veritable city carved into the rock and immersed in the bowels of nature, abandoned.
We are in Vitozza.
“Hear Me” is an invocation, a call, a prayer, and a declaration of determination. For these and many other reasons, we strongly wanted the video to be filmed in these places still so full of power and ancient energy. With the utmost respect on our part, to be able to perceive their heredity even for a few moments.
